5 tips to keep your jewellery looking luxurious

Katerina Spinos

Caring for your precious jewellery is easy, with a few tips. Keep reading to find out how.

1. Have a suitable way to store jewellery

Keep your TVRRINI jewellery in the pouch we provided or in a jewellery box to avoid scratches.

Although gemstones are some of the hardest natural materials in the world, the cut and setting can make them vulnerable. Larger stones in particular should be worn and stored with care.

If your pieces are showing signs of wear, such as plating rubbed off or dents on the surface, we invite you to send them to us for refurbishment to bring back their sparkle.

2. Keep your gemstones safe from makeup and outdoor elements

Porous gemstones, such as the pearls and turquoise we feature in our collections, may be stained by oils or liquids, so it’s particularly important to avoid contact with face creams, sun tan lotion and household chemicals. Porous gemstones are more susceptible to damage when hot, so avoid wearing jewellery to the beach, where the sea salt, sun and sand could easily mar the appearance of your gems. Usually, all that is needed to keep porous gemstones clean is washing them in lukewarm water and polishing the surface with a lint-free, microfibre cloth.

On the other hand, many people do not frequent the beach, and still want practical tips for looking after their jewellery, so by now, you might be curious about when to incorporate jewellery into your daily routine.

3. Protecting gold jewellery

While getting ready can mean throwing together an outfit without abandon, the final step of jewellery adornment requires special care.

Fine jewellery, like naturally porous gemstones, should be protected from the alcohol or acids in products such as make-up, perfume and hairspray. Most of our gold jewellery is made with 18-karat (18K) gold, which is quite soft. Settings and the stones themselves can both be damaged by sharp impacts that can occur when working with your hands.

Heavy exercise is another potential risk. Although solid gold jewellery can withstand exposure to sweat, we would generally advise you to take off any jewellery before your workout since they can get snagged by clothing or external forces. Accidents can happen. If you decide to wear rings, and making sure that is not an immensely valuable piece, wear them on your non-leading hand.

However, as we advise, it would still be better to remove any jewellery before swimming or showering.

4. Keep pearls looking their best

Pearls are delicate gems that require special care and attention. We would recommend that you refrain from using any harsh cleaning methods on them, meaning any liquid cleaners, alcohols, and scrubs should be kept away. Even very mild detergent may damage their delicate coating.

Instead, wiping pearls with a microfibre polishing cloth helps maintain their shine. These cloths are available from specialty stores and essential to have on hand wherever you are.

5. Be aware of harsh substances

Jewellery dips and sonic cleaners can damage pearls and gemstones. These liquids may wear down rhodium coatings.

As a general rule of thumb, always put your jewellery on last, after your perfume has dried.

Jewellery should be cleaned with nothing stronger than very mild soapy water and a soft toothbrush, while porous gemstones and pearls require only lukewarm water. When not wearing them, remember to store your jewellery in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent damage and discoloration.

Above all, remember to have fun with your jewellery. It's important to embrace the ritual of storage and maintenance of your favourite precious items, which will ensure that they appear their best for as long as possible. Your jewellery is meant to be enjoyed, so wear it with confidence and flair. And the better you care for your pieces, the more stories you have to tell of them.
