A rich history

When I began diving into charm bracelets to write this piece, I realised their appeal has spanned centuries. While Queen Victoria is often credited with popularising charm bracelets among women, their history is much older and it is difficult to pinpoint a singular moment or person responsible for their enduring popularity. Over time, they have been crafted from a wide range of materials—shells, plastic, base metals, and precious materials—each telling a unique story based on individual and cultural significance. Charms can be deeply personal, representing times of joy, but they aren’t always light-hearted. Many symbolise the triumph that comes from overcoming life’s challenges.

Beginning a soulful journey

One of my earliest jewellery memories involves a peculiar silver charm. It depicted a lobster that could come and go through a door in its cage, connected by a short chain. As I was just able to comprehend this was stock in my family’s retail store, my suspended disbelief meant the creature was alive. I’d open the cage and the lobster scuttled out with pincers leading the way, its beady eyes alert, but the size was dainty enough to be comical rather than menacing.

For me at the time, that piece was a quiet force of joy. It could bring me pure delight. After school or on weekends, whenever I could take that and other charms out from their boxes, I marvelled at their delicate forms and imagined they would always be ready to join me on any adventures I dreamed of. Looking back years later, I’m acknowledging the big role such moments of exploration had on shaping my life with jewellery.
